On 24 April in the field of Youth Participation project “You are not alone” in “Alternative Reality” happened discussion with experts about – Domestic violence: Situation in Latvia, Cyprus and Ukraine. How to stop violence on the household level?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Latvia, according to the National Police, there were over 12,000 reported cases of domestic violence in 2020. However, it’s important to note that not all cases of domestic violence are reported so the actual number could be even higher. The Latvian government has taken steps to address the issue, including introducing stricter laws and setting up support centres for victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Cyprus, the situation is similar. The Institute of Development and Research in Nicosia reported that there were over 4,000 reported cases of domestic violence in 2020. The government has also introduced stricter laws and set up support centres for victims, but more needs to be done to prevent domestic violence from happening in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Ukraine, the situation is even more challenging. According to the United Nations Population Fund, nearly one in three women in Ukraine have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partner. The Ukrainian government has taken steps to address the issue, including introducing a national strategy to prevent domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To stop violence on the household level, it requires a coordinated effort from individuals, families, communities, and governments. Here are some suggestions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Education and Awareness: Educating people on what domestic violence is, how to identify it, and how to report it is important. Public awareness campaigns can be an effective tool in preventing and addressing domestic violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Support for Victims: Support centres for victims should be set up to provide emotional and practical support. These centres should be accessible and provide free services to victims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Stricter Legal Measures: Laws that criminalize domestic violence should be introduced, and those found guilty of such crimes should be punished accordingly. The legal system should ensure that victims receive justice and perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Counselling for Perpetrators: Counseling and therapy services should be available to perpetrators to help them address their behaviour and prevent future violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Community Involvement: Communities can also play an essential role in preventing domestic violence by creating a culture of respect and support. It’s essential to empower women and men with the knowledge and skills to identify and tackle domestic violence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    It’s important to remember that domestic violence is not inevitable and can be prevented. By working together, we can help eradicate this issue and create a safer world for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
