WHAT IS IT ABOUT

“Prepare the Joy” is our new volunteering team project which brings together 12 young people (6 from Latvia, 6 from other countries) who will come to support us with preparation work for our yearly Christmas marathon for children from orphanages and disadvantaged background, which is also team volunteering project named “Mandarine Land”. We implement Mandarine Land since 2013 every year for 300–400 children organizing from 10 to 14 Christmas events – visiting orphanages of Latvia and also inviting them to our creative center in Riga. This is a hudge work, and a help of volunteers is crucial for that. It takes big energy and good planning to make these events inclusive, warm and well organised. That’s why this preparation phase is so important — if we prepare everything in advance, the Christmas activities will be more professional and safer, and we will reach more children.

That’s why we decided to organize separate activity for early preparation and set up for Christmas events which are planed in December 2025.
Volunteers will stay together for 2 weeks (15 days), and their task will be to help us build the base: reserve spaces, contact orphanages, create invitations, develop event scenarios, search for partners and supporters, create social media plan, safety plans and other important tasks.
But this project is not only about organising events. It’s also about stories of life. We are proud that several young Latvians who will take part in the project were also part of our Christmas activities as children a few years ago— they grew up, and now they want to give something back. They remember how happy they were when they were 8, 10,12 years old and visited “Mandarine Land” before. This is for us the real meaning of solidarity and youth support. For the young volunteers, it’s a chance to get real experience in project work, to do something meaningful, and to learn how to lead a project. We also want to show how former participants can become active young citizens, team members and even role models.
Young people who were once part of our MandarineLand now return to create it for others. It’s real circle of care and support. Together with volunteers from other countries, they bring hope, energy and solidarity into real life.
By preparing the event with heart and with planning, we don’t just make children smile — we also give young volunteers the chance to feel proud, feel useful and see that they can change things around them.
This is exactly what the European Solidarity Corps is made for.
Connection with ESC priorities
Inclusion and diversity — we focus on youth with fewer opportunities: both as target group (children) and as volunteers (several come from similar background).
Active citizenship — young people will take real responsibility and lead the project planning together.
European values and solidarity — we bring together young people from different cultures to work for common good, with respect and empathy.
Skills development — event planning, communication, teamwork, inclusion, safeguarding — young people will get useful skills for life.
Green thinking — we will use recycled materials, avoid unnecessary printing and travel, and promote eco-friendly thinking in planning.

Main objectives
-Prepare all basic logistics and content for the Christmas Marathon.
-Involve young people in real civic activity, where they can grow and contribute.
-Reconnect with former child participants who now want to become part of the team.

WHO CAN TAKE PART:

The Mandarine Land project is designed for active people who are interested in working with children, volunteering and helping people.

Our organisation always encourages volunteers to develop new activities, initiatives and ideas of their own, as long as they are within the scope of the project. We don’t need special skills, but we are happy to have flexible and creative people. We also don’t need professional qualifications, but interest and enthusiasm.

Organisational skills are considered very useful as well as the ability to communicate in English.
In addition, people with singing, dancing and musical instrument playing skills are welcome.

And for volunteers is important to learn:

  • would be comfortable living independently;
  • be able to adapt to new situations;
  • have good problem-solving skills;
  • work and live in mixed groups of volunteers of different nationalities, whose project will be implemented simultaneously in our organisation.

Our organisation is able to involve volunteers with limited possibilities and is willing to accept such applicants.
The project is inclusive and open to all interested persons who are subject to the requirements of the European Solidarity Corpses volunteering projects.
No previous experience necessary

Since 2013, the Cultural Association “Alternative Reality” has been implementing our long-standing initiative – the social integration project for children “Mandarine Land”. With the help of volunteers, a series of events for children is organised every year, with the aim of promoting the social integration of children from vulnerable groups, regardless of social status, nationality or other affiliation.
Every winter, we organise a series of creative events in which at least 300 children from orphanages, crisis centres, low-income families take part and perform various communicative and team tasks aimed at exploring common values: tolerance, respect, honesty, solidarity.
Every year, at least 50 volunteers take part in the events – young people and members of the local community, people from different cultures, ages, backgrounds and outlooks on life, united by their love for children and their desire to give them a part of their hearts.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • to raise public awareness of the problems of the next generation, in particular the integration of children from socially disadvantaged groups
  • to promote the social inclusion of children and young people from marginalised groups
  • to reduce discrimination and xenophobia between different social groups
  • to help children understand universal and European values
  • To promote the development of communication skills in children, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • helping children to set positive goals in life
  • Encourage volunteers to participate in the project as a socially relevant charitable activity, which has a positive impact on the volunteers’ perception of life, broadening their life horizons and raising a socially relevant issue
  • to develop positive attitudes among volunteers towards volunteering and community service
  • to contribute to the development of volunteers’ competences and knowledge
  • to promote community solidarity by involving volunteers from all walks of life, irrespective of origin, social or economic status, national or religious affiliation
